From Common Cause (http://www.commoncause.org):
Elections are supposed to represent the will of the people, not politicians. But here in Pennsylvania, partisan politicians manipulate voting maps to keep themselves and their party in power. We need to reform the rules and make the process of drawing districts impartial, so that our government is of, by, and for the people.
During this legislative session, we’re demanding that state legislators pass redistricting reforms that ensure fair representation and fair maps in our state. The state just wasted huge sums of taxpayer money to unsuccessfully defend its blatant partisan gerrymander before the state Supreme Court — money that could be better used on education or social services.
It’s time to put an independent, people’s commission in charge of drawing legislative districts, instead of partisan politicians. Send a message to your state lawmakers at https://secure2.convio.net/comcau/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=2303 and demand that they pass impartial redistricting reform (HB722/SB22) today.
SB 22 which would put ordinary citizens — not power hungry elected officials — in charge of the redistricting process. Pennsylvania voters’ rights to determine who should represent them in government have been stolen for too long. It’s time for HB722 and SB22 to receive a vote.
The first step is encouraging Rep. Daryl Metcalfe and Sen. Mike Folmer, who chair the government committees, to push their respective bills before the committee and then to the floor for a vote. I hope you’ll join us in pushing for no more court cases, no more power grabs, no more gerrymandering — it’s time for fair maps in Pennsylvania.
