The Pennsylvania Primary Election Is May 18—Everything You Need to Know to Vote

From the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center (http://www.krc-pbpc.org):

As you know, the 2020 election was marked by controversy and false claims that the election was tainted in one way or another. And one upshot of that controversy is that the major forward step PA took in making voting easier—mail-in ballots—is under attack by legislators who say they will soon seek to repeal that provision of Act 77. We will be asking you to help us defend mail-in ballots, and help make voting more accessible in other way soon. But there is one thing you can do right now to help secure mail-in ballots and make it easier for you to vote yourself—sign up to get a mail-ballot for 2021 elections. The General Assembly should not take away a method of voting that so many people use.

And there are important races to vote for this year including for local municipal offices such as commissioners and school boards, for Supreme Court of Pennsylvania which is a statewide court; other appellate courts, judicial retention, school boards and local poll worker positions. There will also be important ballot questions.

The primary will be on May 18th. The last day to register to vote for this election is May 3rd.The general election is November 2nd. In Pennsylvania, you have two options for mail ballots.

  • Mail-in ballot – Any qualified voter may apply for a mail-in ballot. You may simply request this ballot without giving a reason.
  • Absentee ballot – If you plan to be out of the municipality on Election Day, or if you have a disability or illness that prevents you from going to your polling place on Election Day, you can request this ballot type, which still requires you to list a reason for your ballot.

The first step is being registered and deciding if you will vote by mail or in person.
