Three months, three weeks and five days past deadline, the last of the bills to balance the state budget is finally headed to the governor.
Whether Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf will approve the budget bills — ending a stubborn impasse that has consumed the Capitol —remains to be seen. His office has said in recent days only that he will review the budget bills when they land on his desk.
This latest bill, pushed through the Republican-controlled legislature in less than 24 hours, would bring in $200 million this fiscal year and less in future years by allowing a major gambling expansion. It is one of the largest items in the budget plan that also involves borrowing $1.5 billion to be repaid with proceeds from the landmark settlement with tobacco companies, taxing the sale of fireworks and applying the state’s 6 percent sales tax to goods sold on online marketplaces such as Amazon.
The state House approved the bill Wednesday morning.
