From Common Cause (http://www.commoncause.org):
Right now, we have the opportunity to majorly improve Pennsylvania’s elections, but we have to act fast.
Our county election departments have been pleading with the state legislature to implement Precanvassing, a simple change that would speed up ballot-counting and help prevent anti-democracy disinformation from spreading in our state. Send a message to your state legislators at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-your-pa-state-lawmakers-pass-precanvassing to tell them to pass Precanvassing in Pennsylvania.
Currently, our trusted election officials aren’t allowed to process mail-in ballots until 7 a.m. on Election Day, leading to delays in vote-counting — but Precanvassing would let our officials begin processing these ballots beforehand. As we saw in the 2020 election, far-right partisans exploited these delays to sow confusion and disinformation about the integrity of our elections.
This would be a huge relief to our state’s county election workers, who saw over 2 million mail-in ballots come in during the 2020 election but had to wait until Election Day to even begin processing them. That’s why the leading voice for Pennsylvania’s county officials — the County Commissioners Association of PA (CCAP) — advocates for Precanvassing as one of their main priorities. [1]
There’s no reason to delay any longer. If we don’t implement precanvassing in time for the 2024 election, it’ll mean another delay, and another opening for anti-democracy extremists to stoke disinformation and violence.
Precanvassing would make our election system smoother and safer. But we need your help to show our lawmakers that their constituents support this key legislation. Please take action today to bring this simple, commonsense solution to Pennsylvania.
