From Interfaith Power and Light (http://interfaithpowerandlight.org):
From the devastation in Texas to the torrential monsoon rains in Asia that have flooded out millions, to the record breaking heat and wildfires in the West, we are witnessing the impacts of global warming. It is hard to watch this suffering and know that our actions, collectively — our failure to break our dependence on fossil fuels — have contributed to make these disasters even worse.
But in the midst of despair there is still hope. I find hope in the heroic efforts of first responders, and also in the efforts of faith communities that are working for a sustainable future and a safe climate. These beacons of hope are reducing their carbon footprints and making their buildings more energy efficient. These congregations are boldly proclaiming that they are “Still In Paris” and will continue to honor the U.S. commitment to reduce carbon pollution.
Help us celebrate these change makers and be inspired by the amazing progress they are making to protect Creation and our climate.
Congregations are eligible if they finished an energy efficiency, renewable energy, or grounds and water conservation project this year, or has engaged with the community in response to global warming. There is also a planning category for those that have recently finished an energy audit and developed plans for improvements.
Find out here how your congregation can enter to win.
Here’s an example from last year: The 2016 Energy Saver winner was Temple Shalom in Chevy Chase Maryland. Their Bright Idea Project brought together temple members to support creating a brighter more welcome space for their congregation. And in doing so they created not only a more beautiful space, but also made efficiency improvements that saved $6,400 per year on energy costs and reduced their yearly carbon emissions by 48,733 lbs.
Let’s all find hope and inspiration this fall and celebrate those who are making a difference. Nominate a Cool Congregation today!
