From PA Post (https://papost.org/):
The map shows the Mariner East 2 pipeline’s path across 17 Pennsylvania counties on its way to the Marcus Hook industrial complex in Delaware County, where the natural gas liquids it carries will be shipped overseas to make plastics. The map was built using state Department of Environmental Protection shapefiles of the route for which DEP issued permits. The line extends west into Ohio. (Scott Blanchard/StateImpact Pennsylvania)
- StateImpact Pennsylvania just dropped a series on the Mariner East 2 Pipeline, which is about to start carrying propane, butane and ethane through 17 counties in Pennsylvania. The route stretches from Ohio to an export facility in Delaware County.
- Sunoco, which built and will operate ME2, has tallied the industry’s second-highest total of pipeline construction incidents since 2006. The public has access to maps of only the largest underground pipelines, which are tracked in a federal database. There’s a task force in place trying to change that, but it hasn’t developed new, more detailed maps yet.
- The recent Revolution pipeline explosion in Beaver County heightened attention on the issue just as ME2’s expected to go on line. Though blasts are rare, this one realized some of the worst fears people hold of pipelines and highlighted first responders’ somber regard for natural gas pipelines and uniquely severe potential danger they present.
