Food insecurity is an issue for veterans, particularly older veterans. To combat this issue, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently introduced a first-of-its-kind program that will “screen all vets who visit its health care facilities for hunger, asking them whether they’ve struggled to afford food in the past three months.” If they say yes, VA staff will connect them to a local food pantry and share information on enrolling in SNAP. Food insecurity screening and intervention can help reduce veterans’ risk for disability and help older veterans maintain their freedom to live independently.
