From the Alaska Wilderness League (http://www.alaskawild.org):
Public lands define our country – they are here for us today, and they will be here for future generations if we act as good stewards now and in the years ahead. That is why today’s threats to the Tongass National Forest are of such great concern.
Certain politicians are prioritizing legislation that would privatize or otherwise clear the way for logging millions of acres in the Tongass. We need your help to keep these public lands safe in public hands. Sign the petition today at http://act.alaskawild.org/sign/keep-alaskas-public-lands-public-hands/!
One bill on the table would hand over 2 million acres of forest to the state of Alaska to manage “primarily for timber extraction.” Another would give away pristine old-growth Tongass stands in exchange for private lands that already have been heavily logged.
Trading ‘stumps for trees’ isn’t a fair deal for this generation or for future generations.
In the face of these threats, we need to speak up for a future we will be proud to leave to the next generation. Please click here to tell your members of Congress that Alaska’s public lands should stay in public hands.
