From the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (http://www.interfaithimmigration.org):
On June 6, 1939, over 900 Jewish refugees aboard the MS St. Louis were turned away from the shores of the United States, and sent back to Nazi Europe. As our government again seeks to ban refugees from America, we know that we cannot stay silent.
HIAS is convening vigils across the country beginning on the evening of June 6, to commemorate the tragedy of the St. Louis and call on our elected officials to stand up for today’s refugees.
Go to https://www.hias.org/st-louis-vigils to find a vigil in a community near you, or for materials to plan your own.
We know the tragic consequences of denying safety to refugees. We know what can happen in a climate of fear, when our government confuses the perpetrators of violence with its victims. And we will not allow history to repeat itself.
As we approach World Refugee Day on June 20, join a vigil in your community to call on your elected officials to lead with the forward vision that comes from an understanding of the past.
