The Harrisburg Chapter of Heading God’s Call to End Gun Violence (HGC), invites your students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 to participate in our essay contest, writing about “How gun violence has affected my life, how I have responded, and how I would like our society to respond.” HGC is composed of people of all faith who believe that God is calling us to work to end gun violence. The essays should not exceed 500 words. The word count must be included at the end of the essay. Facts and resources are not necessary, but must be identified if used.
Submissions will be judged on the clarity of thought, grammar, spelling, neatness, and emotional impact. Successful entries will cover all aspects of the topic and demonstrate understanding of the topic as experienced in the writer’s own life and experience. Essays will be judged without knowledge of the name of the writer. All decisions of the judges are final.
Participants must completely fill out registration form. Contact Gerald Rhoades at GeraldWR@aol.com for registration forms. The writer’s name must not appear on the essay, only on the registration form. Essays and registration forms must be emailed and arrive at Gerald Rhoades’ in box at GeraldWR@aol.com on or before March 15, 2022. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Winners will be notified by April 15, 2022.
First place winner will receive a $200 cash prize and will be invited to read his/her essay at the Gun Violence Awareness Day, May 1, 2022.
Second place winner will receive a cash prize of $100.
Third place winner will receive a cash prize of $75.
Winners will be recognized and receive their prizes at the Gun Violence Awareness Day on May 1, 2022 unless other arrangements are made.
