Americans are Going Bankrupt from Getting Sick

From Faith in Healthcare (https://faithinhealthcare.org):

From the March 15th issue of The Atlantic:  “Medical debt is a uniquely American phenomenon, a burden that would be unfathomable in many other developed countries. According to a survey published this month in the American Journal of Public Health, nearly 60 percent of people who have filed for bankruptcy said a medical expense “very much” or “somewhat” contributed to their bankruptcy. That was more than the percentage who cited home foreclosure or student loans.”

Improve the current system to reduce health care costs, drug costs and insurance costs through associations and co-ops. Do not federalize the healthcare system. Government should regulate not operate industries. I do not believe religion-affiliated organisations should take strong positions in either direction when it comes to such issues.

The faith community has a long, proud history of speaking and acting on issues that affect people who are least likely to be able to defend themselves. Our Council has been involved in this work for decades, and we are not alone. We do not engage in political campaigns to support or oppose candidates, but we stand on Jesus’ call to care for our most vulnerable neighbors, which is expression of living out our faith.
