The Berks County Residential Center, a Bern Township facility where asylum seekers have been held and that has been the subject of protests for years, will be shutting its doors.
County officials announced Wednesday that they have been informed by the federal government that it will be ending its contract with the county on Jan. 31.
Stephanie Weaver, the public relations officer for the county, issued a statement saying that county officials met this afternoon with management and staff at the center to inform them of the federal decision.
“The County of Berks would like to thank the BCRC staff, employees and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees for their service and commitment to this program,” the statement said. “County officials are also committed to do everything possible to support these employees during this transition.”
