FAMM this week called on Congress to expand the federal compassionate release program. This program is designed to let sick, elderly, and other prisoners who pose little risk to public safety get out of prison early.
On Wednesday, we hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill that featured policy experts and affected individuals, including FAMM’s general counsel, Mary Price, who co-authored a seminal report on compassionate release in 2012. You can read more about the briefing and our esteemed panelists here.

Securing broad federal sentencing reform in the current political climate will be challenging, but expanding compassionate release should be a no-brainer.
After all, releasing elderly and sick prisoners would save significant amounts of money without jeopardizing public safety.
