Faith Voter Reflection Guide Available

From Faith in Public Life (http://www.faithinpubliclife.org):

Next Tuesday, June 7, marks the last of the state primaries ahead of the 2016 general election.

This election will be critical in determining how our country responds to the climate crisis and if we follow through on the commitments we made to the rest of the world in Paris. We hope that all people of faith will consider the climate and Creation when they vote. That’s why we worked with Faith in Public Life to produce the Faith Voter Reflection Guide. For the first time, this influential guide includes a section called “Global Warming: A Threat to Creation and our Children’s Future,” along with other issues that are relevant to the faith voter.

Click here to download the guide and get other tips on how your congregation can support you and your community in voting your values this year. Feel free to print it out and share it with your faith community.

As a nonpartisan nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, we do not endorse specific candidates, nor do our congregations. But that doesn’t mean we can’t encourage and support our congregants in doing their civic duty and voting with their values in mind.

The most recent State of the Climate report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) documents April as the “12th consecutive month of record warmth for the globe.”1 That’s a full year of not just above-average temperatures, but of record-breaking temperatures. People in India and Pakistan are acutely experiencing these effects as they suffer in the midst of a record-breaking heat wave with temperatures soaring to nearly 124˚F. This heat wave, exacerbated by drought, comes on the heels of last year’s record-breaking heat wave, which resulted in 2,400 deaths. If we don’t act now, this trend will continue as our future and could get much worse.

Leadership from the United States in both reducing our own emissions and supporting vulnerable nations is critical to address global warming in a responsible and just way. Our 2016 election, which occurs less than one year after the breakthrough in Paris when 195 nations agreed to act on climate change, will be a moment of truth. It will send a powerful message to the rest of the world about where the United States stands on the issue of climate change.

Interfaith Power & Light is pleased to be working with Faith in Public Life and other partners, to ensure that climate is one of the key issues people of faith consider when they vote.

As Pope Francis reminds us, the Earth is our common home, and the climate belongs to everyone. Climate change is the greatest threat humans have ever faced. It will only be solved if people everywhere in the world act together. Let’s lead the way. Please help us make a difference by voting for the Earth this year.
