From the Union of Concerned Scientists (http://www.ucsusa.org):
It’s been almost three decades since the Cold War ended, but US nuclear weapons policies are still based on outdated 1980s thinking—including the right to use nuclear weapons first in a conflict. This should disturb all Americans—that as a nation we would unleash the world’s most horrific, uniquely destructive weapons and start a nuclear war.
It’s well past time to change that. Congress must adopt a “no-first-use” nuclear policy that makes clear that under no circumstance will the United States start a nuclear war by using nuclear weapons first.
Write today at https://secure.ucsusa.org/onlineactions/C-5SxiSuKE-Q_uELBdLlzw2 to urge your member of Congress to cosponsor Rep. Adam Smith’s (WA-9) bill that explicitly declares that “it is the policy of the United States to not use nuclear weapons first.”
By doing so, you will join the Union of Concerned Scientists, our partner groups, and tens of thousands of others around the country in sending an unmistakable signal that the public is concerned and engaged and demands bold action from Washington to reduce the risk of nuclear war.
