In 1986, Congress decided to punish crack cocaine and powder cocaine offenses very differently, even though the two drugs are chemically the same. Experts have found that there is no good reason for this different treatment — and the inequality disproportionately harms Black people and communities.
That’s why FAMM believes we need to end the disparity once and for all.
On January 27, Sens. Booker and Durbin announced the Equal Act, which would end the sentencing disparity and apply the reform retroactively to those already convicted or sentenced. This bill will be considered in the U.S. Senate in the next few months, and we need to get as many senators as possible to support it.
The Equal Act would finally give equal treatment to crack and powder cocaine cases — but we need your help for it to pass!
Please call Senator Pat Toomey and Senator Bob Casey today at 844-899-8819. Urge them to support this bill and #EndtheDisparity.
