Become an Early Co-Signer: Justice for All Civil Rights Act

Over the last five decades, right-wing courts have diluted the impact of monumental gains made by the civil rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s. Today, unacceptable, deep inequities persist in people’s access to quality education, affordable insurance, mortgages or loans, or even to safe drinking water.

Now, Rashida Tlaib — a progressive and the first Palestinian-American to enter U.S. Congress — will introduce the Justice For All Civil Rights Act when the new Congress convenes in early 2019.

This bill addresses the systemic effects of discrimination against marginalized communities, as well as institutionalized racism and inequality. It will create a way to hold politicians, employers, and landlords accountable in courts, which is why we know it will face massive pushback from those that stand to benefit from cyclic poverty. That’s why we need to show massive public support behind the proposed bill from the very beginning — and that’s why your signature matters.

Despite the tireless work of generations of civil rights activists, our nation’s record-breaking income gap indicates that we are sliding back at an alarming rate.(1) Voter suppression continues and is still used to win elections.(2) The prison industrial complex rakes in billions on the backs of black and brown Americans, and then contributes to political candidates who perpetuate the cycle.(3) Predatory lending leads to mass foreclosures of entire segregated, marginalized neighborhoods.(4) It’s time we transform how we fight institutionalized discrimination.

With your support, we can implement a New Civil Rights Act for the 21st Century, which will:

  • Challenge unfair law enforcement and criminal justice policies that disproportionately impact people of color
  • End redlining car, home loan, and insurance practices that hurt low-income communities of color
  • Overturn state and federal budget policies that restrict low-income communities’ access to funds for vital public services, roads, schools, hospitals, parks, etc.
  • Stop water and utility shut-offs, as well as discriminatory practices in tax assessment and foreclosure
  • Expand employment opportunities by challenging private and public policies that deny returning citizens or those with bad credit from employment opportunities(5)
