Bill Disarming Domestic Abusers Signed into Law

All the calls, emails and visits paid off. Last week, the PA Senate voted 43-5 for HB 2060! The bill to disarm domestic abusers was signed by Governor Wolf’s on October 12. Finally, PA joins the states that have stepped up for safety since Parkland. Finally, PA has passed a commonsense bill to ensure that people who should not have guns will not have them.

This took longer than it should have, and we had to fight off a last-ditch effort by gun extremists who were willing to stand up for abusers against victims and survivors and PA families.

Your hard work made this possible, and we know it’s just the beginning.

The Council is committed to the work of reducing gun violence, and our Board of Directors just adopted a resolution in support of this work. Please know that we’ll keep fighting to make PA safer.

Governor Wolf to Sign Domestic Abuser Gun Violence Prevention Bill–statement

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today announced his plans to immediately sign the domestic abuser gun violence prevention bill (House Bill 2060) and thanked advocates for their tireless work on behalf of domestic abuse survivors and future victims. The bill was passed in the House and Senate but will need signatures from both chambers before ultimately reaching the governor’s desk for signature.

Governor Wolf’s full statement:

“For years, victims and advocates have fought tirelessly for passage of this commonsense and urgently needed reform. Today is about them but I am proud of their work and to have stood with them in this fight.

“We know that too many families are being torn apart by domestic violence and too many domestic abusers use firearms to kill, injure and terrorize their victims. The reforms passed today are long overdue and will make important strides to protect victims and reduce violence.

“There is more work to be done, and I look forward to working with the House and Senate to enact additional commonsense reforms to reduce violence, support victims and keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.”
