From the Union of Concerned Scientists (http://www.ucsusa.org):
The scope of the problem is vast: Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated that as many as 10 million people may be exposed to unsafe levels of PFAS, a class of chemicals contaminating the water of communities across the country.
These highly toxic chemicals are found in everything from nonstick pans to food packaging to firefighting foam, and have been linked to liver damage, thyroid disease, and some cancers. Military communities are especially at risk, as the firefighting foam used in training exercises contains PFAS chemicals, which can end up in nearby water sources and supply.
The good news is that Congress is close to passing legislation that can make a real difference, and we need your help today! Tell Senator Pat Toomey to make the clean-up of PFAS chemicals a priority at https://secure.ucsusa.org/onlineactions/yuPI3NwpAEGg5mXaitRy3A2.
PFAS amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would result in better measurement of PFAS contamination and coordination of clean-up efforts. To make sure these crucial provisions make it into the final bill, Congress needs to hear from you. These solutions are an important first step in ensuring clean water for millions of people around the country. Thanks to UCS supporters like you, Congress is starting to understand the urgency of this crisis and the need to act.
But the fight isn’t over yet. We need real solutions to this public health crisis. Urge Congress to advance legislation to protect our water from these toxic PFAS chemicals.
