From the Sentencing Project (http://www.sentencingproject.org):
Ending life imprisonment and other extreme sentences is a top advocacy priority for The Sentencing Project, and we are committed to achieving this goal no matter how long it takes. Fortunately, we can make some serious progress this summer with your support.
There are two critical pieces of bipartisan sentencing reform legislation currently before the U.S. Senate that would reduce extreme sentences and foster a safer, fairer, and more humane federal justice system. Please urge your Senators to cosponsor these bills and vote for them when they come to the floor at https://www.sentencingproject.org/actions/support-the-covid-19-safer-detention-act-and-the-first-step-implementation-act/.
On May 27, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the COVID-19 Safer Detention Act. If passed by the full Senate, the bill would expand compassionate release opportunities to the oldest and longest-serving people in the federal prison system.
Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved the First Step Implementation Act, which includes sentencing reduction opportunities for people serving long sentences for drug-related offenses, including life without parole.
Both bills bring the criminal legal system more in line with the wealth of criminological research that illustrates the ineffectiveness of needlessly lengthy prison sentences.
Thank you so much for your support advancing federal reforms. The momentum we can build this summer in Congress will be a crucial step towards ending mass incarceration.
