From the Office of Social Justice, Christian Reformed Church in America (http://justice.crcna.org/):

Your voice is needed this morning. Today the Senate is expected to vote on a bill that would force local law enforcement to act as federal immigration officers. S. 3100, the so-called “Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act” would sow distrust between local law enforcement and immigrant communities. Please note that Senator Pat Toomey is the prime sponsor of this legislation.

Go to http://p2a.co/qmdh48h to tell your Senators that cooperation between the immigrant community and local law enforcement is essential for public safety. Urge them to oppose S. 3100.

S. 3100 would target U.S. cities where local law enforcement use discretion on whether or not to inquire about an individual’s immigration status. These community policing policies are essential to ensure that all people, regardless of immigration status, feel confident interacting with local law enforcement without the threat of deportation.

Our deepest concern about this bill is the potential of families’ being separated through deportation. Because local law enforcement would be forced to act as federal immigration officers, it is likely that minor traffic violations or the reporting of domestic violence incidents could result in deportations.

Urge your Senators to support community policing policies that create safer communities and better trust between the immigrant community and local law enforcement.
