The Choose Clean Water Coalition brings together more than 200 groups across the Chesapeake Bay watershed to work together for clean water. As a Coalition, we seek to mobilize our member groups to take action to advance our policy priorities, while supporting work done by our member groups and celebrating their individual victories and successes.

In this job you will:
- Develop and implement a strategic communications plan to support Choose Clean Water Coalition’s policy goals. The Coalition’s current policy priorities are:
- Promote and defend federal policies and investment that support Chesapeake Bay watershed restoration and protection efforts.
- Ensure Chesapeake Bay pollution limits continue to make progress towards returning clean water to the region.
- Strengthen policies and permits to stop polluted runoff in urbanized areas.
- Protect public health, communities, and regional water resources from the impacts of natural gas development.
- Promote environmental justice to ensure underserved and overburdened communities share equitably in the benefits of clean water.
- Create tool-kits, sample op/eds and LTEs, trainings, and other materials to help Coalition member groups effectively communicate about key Coalition issues. Help our members that currently have low communications capacity grow their capacity. Leverage the communications capacity of member groups who have communications professionals on staff.
- Lead the Coalition’s region-wide communications campaign leading up to the 2017 mid-point assessment of the Chesapeake Bay cleanup.
- The Coalition’s convenings – our annual conference, annual meeting, and lobby day on Capitol Hill – are important opportunities to provide communications trainings, facilitate our members sharing information, and strategically communicate to key decision-makers. The Communications Manager has lead responsibility for the planning and success of these convenings.
- Collect and disseminate examples of Coalition member successes, important innovations, and state or local successes or shortfalls in reducing pollution.
- Create and manage Coalition website content, which may include revamping the website. Create social media content for the Coalition and sample content for members to post. Create trainings and other communications materials for use by Coalition staff and Coalition member groups. Build the Coalition’s brand while bringing attention to the work our members are doing that advance the Coalition’s policy goals.
- Convene a working group of communications professionals working at Coalition member organizations.
- The majority of the work involves external communications, including communications with Coalition member groups, governmental and non-governmental partners, news outlets, elected officials, and the public.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
- Minimum 5-7 years of professional experience or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize communications tools to achieve campaign objectives.
- Experience developing and implementing an organization’s strategic communications plan.
- Experience managing an organization’s social media presence and knowledge of social media trends.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully working with the media and organizing successful media events.
- Ability to communicate positions and build public awareness.
- Grasp of water and other environmental issues in the Chesapeake Bay Region.
- Experience working with coalitions or partnerships.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including strong copy-editing skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively with a broad base of coalition groups and people from diverse backgrounds.
- Must be a self-starter who possesses a high degree of initiative.
- Positive attitude, collaborative spirit, sense of humor.
- Experience with software for design, photo editing, video editing, web publishing, especially Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Quark preferred but not required.
- Working knowledge of Search Engine Optimization
There may be travel approximately 1-2 days per month.
