Between July 2017 and July 2018, consumer prices increased 2.9 percent, and despite economic growth, the rate of inflation suggests Americans are earning less than a year ago. Higher housing costs make up the bulk of the consumer price increase, with food expenses also increasing, although slightly. Average weekly earnings, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.1 percent in the past 12 months.
