Call Our Senators to Urge Passage of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act

From the Economic Policy Institute (http://www.epi.org/):

One of the top priorities facing our country is to pass legislation that would help restore workers’ rights to join a union and bargain for better wages, benefits, and safer workplaces. That legislation is the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.

First, thank you for taking time to write your Senators to demand passage of this critical legislation. So far, more than 31,000 people have written letters to their U.S. Senators, demanding they support this critical legislation to strengthen our rights to organize a union.

A new EPI report by Lawrence Mishel, released today, makes clear “a major factor depressing wage growth for middle earners and driving the growth of wage inequality over the last four decades has been the erosion of collective bargaining.”

Can you take 2-minutes to call our Senators today and urge them to pass the PRO Act?

Hello, my name is ______________, I live in [city/town] and I’m one of the senator’s constituents.

I am calling to make sure the senator votes in favor of the PRO Act.

The PRO Act would reform our nation’s labor laws so private-sector employers can’t perpetually stall union elections and contract negotiations, and coerce and intimidate workers seeking to unionize.

For far too long, U.S. workers have not had the labor protections they need to fight for decent wages and benefits. The PRO Act is once-in-a-generation legislation to support working people.

Please pass my thoughts along to the Senator and ask them to vote for the PRO Act. Thank you.

This is the bill we’ve been fighting for. Pick up the phone and call our Senators today!

EPI’s research shows that the share of workers covered by a collective bargaining agreement fell from 27% in 1979 to just 11.6% in 2019. In other words, more than 1 in 4 U.S. workers used to be in a union. But now, union representation has fallen dramatically to about 1 in 9.

That is a stunning decline. And, as union membership declines, so does the number of working people who can live in the middle class.

Call our Senators now and tell them that rebuilding collective bargaining is critical to reestablishing robust wage growth for U.S. workers.

Thank you for all you do to fight for an economy that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.
