The Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis, California has become a net zero facility and a certified Cool Congregation with 100% energy reduction! It took them sixteen years of gradual improvements: in 2004, they installed a small solar array on the office roof; in 2010 they replaced leaky windows and upgraded lighting; in 2013, they installed a solar car port; in 2020, they installed a large array on their classroom building. They also replaced gas appliances with heat pump appliances in 2015, 2018, and 2020.
The story of St. Martin’s journey to becoming a zero-carbon congregation speaks to what can happen when we align our faith values with practical actions. These changes didn’t happen overnight, but through a steady vision that centered their calling to care for their neighbors and for Creation.
If your congregation has reduced by 10% or more, it qualifies for certification. Apply today!
