From the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (http://www.nrcat.org):
Congress has left for August recess, and it is crucial that we continue to press them on our issues while they are back in their home states. If you are at an event with your member of Congress, raise one of these issues below. If not, take action through our online Advocacy Center.
- Support faithful budget priorities that end prolonged solitary confinement for fiscal, as well as moral, reasons:
NRCAT has joined many other faith groups in supporting a Faithful Budget which will be circulated to members of Congress when they return to set the FY 2018 budget. The Faithful Budget notes that holding someone in isolation in a federal supermax prison costs $75,000 per year – 3 times as much as it costs to house someone in the general prison population. These are the same dynamics that make the torture of solitary confinement something that must end now at the state level, where most of those in solitary are held. Please add your voice to NRCAT’s campaign with Governors of all 50 states to call for abolishing the torture of long-term solitary confinement in your state at http://org.salsalabs.com/o/2162/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=21698.
- Speak out against the Muslim Ban:
President Trump’s executive order banning refugees and people from six Muslim countries has produced life-changing consequences for many inside and outside this country. Unfortunately, though, the truth is that many in Congress have previously called for similar measures. Public pressure can persuade Members of Congress to support the growing consensus that this ban is immoral and bad policy. Please contact your Members of Congress to express your opposition to banning people from the U.S. based on religious identity or national origin at http://org.salsalabs.com/o/2162/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=22204.
Thank you for your help with these issues, and we hope you enjoy the end of summer and enter the fall ready to keep fighting to end torture forever!
