From the Alaska Wilderness League (http://www.alaskawild.org):
This has been intense. Last week, we told you we were incredibly concerned about President-elect Donald Trump’s stance on opening the Arctic Ocean and other lands in Alaska to drilling.
Trump’s transition team has stated, “Rather than continuing the current path to undermine and block America’s fossil fuel producers, the Trump Administration will encourage the production of these resources by opening onshore and offshore leasing on federal lands and waters.”
Our first step is to make sure President Obama does everything he can to slow drilling in the Arctic Ocean (http://act.alaskawild.org/thanks/fiveyearplan_2016/?akid=1640.81440.Kgpr7m&rd=1&t=1). He can do this by excluding Arctic drilling leases from his 5-year-plan – to be released any day now.
To encourage President Obama to do the right thing and protect the Arctic Ocean from oil drilling, you can share a tweet or Facebook post, or call the White House at this number: (202) 456-1111
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge also faces intense drilling pressure.
Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Rep. Don Young (R-AK) have intensified their bid to drill in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge, a region critical to the Gwich’in people and where polar bears and caribou bear their young.
We’re going to fight this battle in Congress by rallying our Refuge champions and building a team of Refuge supporters large enough to block any Refuge drilling legislation.
We have won fights like this before, and we’ll bring all our resources to bear to do it again.
