From Project H.O.M.E. (http://www.projecthome.org):
HB 33, the bill that would eliminate General Assistance (GA), is scheduled to move through the House Appropriations Committee today and may be up for a final vote on the House floor as early as this afternoon. As a reminder, GA is a critical program that helps people with disabilities, people fleeing domestic violence, and people in treatment for substance use disorders meet their most basic needs and – often- stay in their homes and out of a crisis situation.
IF YOU HAVE ONE MINUTE: Please email your Pennsylvania State Elected Officials at http://action.projecthome.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=1075 to oppose any cuts to General Assistance and protect GA in the budget.
IF YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES: Call your Representative in the PA House to let them know you oppose ANY cuts to General Assistance! Find your Representative at http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/index.cfm#address.
HERE’S A SUGGESTED SCRIPT FOR YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE:
“Hello, my name is ____ and I’m a constituent of Representative _____’s. I’m calling to encourage Rep. ___ to oppose any legislation that would eliminate or cut General Assistance.
General Assistance is a small targeted program that provides about $200 per month for individuals who are disabled, in treatment for substance use disorder, or escaping domestic violence. It is often the difference between someone being able to pay rent and wash clothes, or ending up in a more costly shelter or hospital. Thousands of vulnerable Pennsylvanians from across the state rely on this assistance to get back on their feet. Please encourage Rep. _____ to preserve General Assistance.”
