During the recent Ecumenical Advocacy Days gathering in Washington, DC, NCC’s Faith and Order Convening Table held a pre-gathering session exploring the theology behind Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s sermon “Beyond Vietnam” at Riverside Church in New York. King’s words came 50 years ago, April 4, 1967 – a year to the day before he was assassinated. The sermon was given in the midst of continued escalation in Vietnam, some progress on civil rights, and leading up to the pivotal 1968 presidential election campaign.
