From Heeding God’s Call (http://www.heedinggodscall.org):
HR 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 (Thompson – CA): A bill to expand federal background checks to cover most private sales of guns, including online sales. It would close the infamous gun show loophole, no longer enabling so-called collectors (actually unlicensed private sellers) to sell without having background checks performed by third party licensed dealers.
HR 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021 (Clyburn – SC): A bill to close the notorious Charleston Loophole, which enabled Dylann Roof to falsely purchase a handgun used to kill nine at Mother Emanuel Church in 2015 because the three day default for results of the background check was exceeded. The new bill provides additional time (ten days) before the default kicks in, allowing law enforcement important time to complete thorough checks..
Both bills now go to the US Senate, where Majority Leader Schumer has promised to schedule a floor vote. Under existing filibuster rules, passage in the Senate may be difficult (60 of 100 votes needed). Nonetheless, Heeding urges all to write or phone US Senator Pat Toomey at once and demand he signal support for these bills to Minority Leader McConnell and vote for them. His contact info: 455 Dirksen Senate Office Bldg, Washington, DC 20510, (202) 224-4254. (NOTE: Best to call or send e-mail or fax to DC office—snail mail can take weeks to be received. Snail mail should be sent to in-state offices. Find offices: http://toomey.senate.gov
FYI: US Senator Bob Casey supports passage of both bills.
