From Half in Ten (http://halfinten.org/):
Take Action to stand up for low income Americans in the budget debate at http://www2.americanprogress.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=114.
2011 presents us with new challenges to reduce poverty and ensure opportunity for all. Cuts have already been proposed to critical antipoverty programs even as the unemployment rate still hovers around 10 percent. Proposals are floating to make permanent changes to programs benefitting low- and moderate-income Americans that would undermine the ability of these services to reach those most in need.
We’ll need to make the case for a budget that creates jobs, helps low-income families achieve economic security, and strengthens our communities. Half in Ten is committed to providing you with the tools you need to advocate for policies that reflect these values.
Step 1: Get educated. On February 2, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST, we will be holding an educational webinar on the looming policy battles affecting low-income families in the 112th Congress, what this means for our collective work going forward, and ways you can get involved (watch for the invitation to arrive in your inboxes tomorrow).
Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Al Franken (D-MN) will keynote the webinar, and budget experts will walk you through the top issues that will frame antipoverty advocacy this year. We will conclude by providing opportunities for you to take concrete action steps and to enlist others. This is one webinar you don’t want to miss!
Step 2: Take this month’s action step at http://www2.americanprogress.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=114: Tell your senators to oppose proposed funding cuts to critical services that create jobs, strengthen communities, and fight poverty. We need to start speaking up now about making the necessary investments for a shared economic recovery that lifts up everyone.
Step 3: Let us know other ways you’d like to be involved.
We’ve also started a new section on our website (http://halfinten.org/get_involved/program_guides/) where you can download program and event ideas to fight poverty, including a new one from our Minnesota partners on setting and tracking a poverty-reduction goal in your state (http://halfinten.org/uploads/support_files/MNFeb10Event.pdf). We’ll be featuring events and ideas like these in a new section on our newsletter, “community spotlight,” which will serve as a venue for best-practice sharing.
