From the United Church of Christ’s Justice and Witness Ministries (http://www.ucc.org/justice/):
The economy may be recovering but millions of workers are still without jobs.
The unemployment rate is 9.7% and some 15 million people are unemployed. Congress has taken some small steps toward job creation. The Senate recently passed a $15 billion jobs bill, but this legislation is woefully inadequate to address the nation’s extreme need for jobs in a slowly recovering economy.
Urge your elected officials to do more for job creation at https://secure3.convio.net/ucc/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=559.*
Experts estimate we need more than 10 million jobs just to return to pre-recession level of unemployment. To address this problem, Congress must enact a variety of measures to spur job creation such as:
-
providing fiscal relief to the states to prevent layoffs;
-
strengthening the safety net to help the unemployed and inject needed money into local communities;
-
directly creating public service jobs; and
-
investing in infrastructure.
Our faith tradition suggests that work is a sacred act. As people of faith, we must call for an economy that provides a good job for everyone who wants and needs one.
Tell Congress to pass legislation that creates employment!
