PA Statewide Bake Sale for Public Education

Posted at http://pastatewidebakesaleforpubliceducation.wordpress.com/about/

Last year we read a story in our local newspaper that caught our attention. This story highlighted the millions of dollars our school district had to cut from its budget because of Governor Corbett’s reduction in state funding to public schools across Pennsylvania. When we went to a school board meeting, we were shocked to find that we and two of our friends were the only community members there. We could not believe that so few people were at the meeting learning about how these enormous cuts in state funding would affect our local district. We started to discuss ways that we could bring awareness to the issue. We also considered how we could voice our opposition to the cuts to public education.

Many of you who read this will have helped with a fundraiser, such as a bake sale, for a school or another organization. You understand how difficult it is to raise enough money to pay for a field trip or a special event. When our schools are facing cuts of hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, it is impossible for local districts to make up the difference with any type of fundraiser.

There simply are not enough cookies in Pennsylvania to protect our children from the damage these budget cuts are inflicting on our public schools.

The statewide mock bake sale is an opportunity for Pennsylvanians to raise their voices together in support of our public schools. We need our lawmakers to understand that we will not stand idly by as they continue to cut funding from our schools. We will not stand idly by and watch our school boards make impossible choices about which programs and teachers to eliminate from our children’s schools. We will not stand idly by as we watch our children receive an education that is inferior to that of their brothers and sisters who came before them.

This website will provide you with the tools you need to hold a mock bake sale in your community or to find a bake sale in your area to support. Please keep in mind that our events will not be real bake sales. Our cookies, cupcakes, and brownies are props that we will use to highlight these devastating cuts to public school funding. Feel free to give them away to people who want to talk to you about this issue.

All you need to participate in this statewide effort to support our schools is a plate of cookies, a sign, and belief that all of our children in Pennsylvania deserve a quality education.

We hope that you will decide to join our growing, diverse, and increasingly organized community of parents, grandparents, and community members who are taking action to support our public schools. We look forward to hearing about all of the bake sales across state. As we all know: There are not enough cookies in Pennsylvania to make up for the devastating cuts in state funding.

Best of luck,

Erica and Susan
